A Message from Our Partners at the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program Office is inviting SSVF grantees to facilitate participation in a survey aimed at collecting information to better understand community progress related to ending Veteran homelessness. The information gathered as a part of this nationwide survey will also help the VA–along with HUD and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH)–tailor training and technical assistance so that it more effectively addresses local needs. The survey will be completed based on Continuum of Care (CoC) geographies and was sent to SSVF grantees on April 3, 2017. SSVF grantees have been asked to coordinate their responses with the CoC and local Veteran planning groups. We support this collaboration in order to ensure the feedback received is as comprehensive as possible. Older veterans, generally considered those age 50 or above, are one of the largest subpopulations of veterans experiencing homelessness. For many of these veterans, competitive employment is the key to housing stability and quality of life. Unfortunately, while the overall participation rate of older workers in the labor force has increased over the last several years, that trend does not extend to older veterans.
