SAMHSA Reaffirms Efforts To Address the Public Health Emergency on the Opioid Crisis Today President Donald Trump declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency. This action reaffirms the role of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and SAMHSA as leaders in supporting evidence-based programs in prevention, and providing treatment and recovery services to the 11 million Americans affected by the opioid crisis.  by Associated Press   HOUSTON — Inmates serving time in Texas prisons have also found a way to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Officials say Texas prison inmates donated more than $53,000 from their commissary funds to the American Red Cross to be used for hurricane relief. Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark says more than 6,600 inmates donated money between Aug. 31 and Sept. 30. Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane on Aug. 25. The commissary funds are usually used by inmates to buy food and supplies while they're incarcerated. This wasn't the first time Texas prison inmates have donated money to help after a natural disaster. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, inmates donated more than $40,000 to the American Red Cross. Harvey also led five Texas prisons to evacuate nearly 6,000 inmates because of catastrophic flooding. It remains one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history....

The deadline for submitting the DRAFT Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress data for All Persons and Veterans is Tuesday, October 31, 2017 by 11:59pm PST . Communities that submit draft data by this deadline will be given priority for reviewing their data submissions and preparing for the FINAL deadline on Friday, December 1, 2017. We have no substantive changes to the AHAR since last year, but we updated resources to improve clarity and account for updated HMIS data standards to properly match to our AHAR report. Although we noted that last year's resources are relevant and appropriate to use for the 2017 AHAR, we have since replaced all the resources.
