2014 National Conference Materials Now Available Online

Presentation materials from our 2014 National Conference on Ending Homelessness workshops are now available on the Alliance website. The materials cover a wide range of topics discussed during conference workshops, from improving local data on youth homelessness, rapid re-housing in high cost rental markets, to integrating data and sharing research to end veteran homelessness, and much more. We will continue to add workshop presentation materials to the website as they become available. If you are a conference presenter who would like materials from your workshop added to the website, please email Alliance Communications Associate Emanuel Cavallaro at ecavallaro@naeh.org.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced on Monday, August 11, the awarding of approximately $300 million in grants under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. The funding will go to community organizations that promote housing stability among very low income veteran families. The funding will allow providers of homeless services to offer outreach, case management, assistance in obtaining VA benefits, and other public benefits to veterans and their families, and will allow community-based groups to offer temporary financial assistance on behalf of veterans for rent payments, utility payments, security deposits, and moving costs. The award represents a significant advance in the national effort to address homelessness among veterans.

Last week, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released a notice on how to prioritize people who are experiencing chronic homelessness and other vulnerable homeless people for permanent supportive housing. The in-depth notice is intended to help communities ensure they are properly targeting their limited permanent supportive housing resources toward the most vulnerable populations. The push comes as part of the Administration's overall efforts to help communities end chronic homelessness by the end of 2016.
Often what most people think of when they think "homeless" is someone experiencing chronic homelessness, but the largest segment of the homeless population is actually made up of non-chronically homeless single adults. In this post, we look at highlights from a panel discussion at our 2014 National Conference on efforts to understand and help this subpopulation.
