URGENT: Tell your Senators to Protect Medicaid |
The Senate is making its final push to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and this latest proposal, currently referred to by its original co-sponsors’ names – Graham-Cassidy, makes huge cuts to Medicaid and fundamentally restructures the program.
Medicaid is essential to the fight to end homelessness. Medicaid funding enables homeless people to treat physical and mental health needs, and pays for services for people in permanent supportive housing. The health coverage it provides prevents people in poverty from experiencing medical or financial crises which may lead to homelessness.
The bill under consideration by the Senate effectively ends the Medicaid expansion, and includes deep, additional cuts to Medicaid by instituting per capita caps to funding.
This would be devastating to our country’s most vulnerable citizens. The next week will be crucial to protecting the resources communities need to fight homelessness. The Senate only has until September 30th to pass this bill, and it will only take 3 additional Senators to reject these cuts. Your calls can make the difference. Together, we can send a message that your Senator needs to:
- Vote NO on any healthcare bill that cuts, caps, or block grants Medicaid, or phases out the Medicaid expansion in any way.
- Commit to protecting coverage guarantees and service affordability for people escaping homelessness, including services for people with severe health or mental health conditions, and those recovering from substance abuse disorders.
