Opportunity Starts at Home: Leaders join together to take on affordable housing |
Housing affordability has a direct impact on the nation’s health, influencing homelessness, economic mobility, education, health outcomes, and countless other factors. This week, the Alliance joined a diverse multi-sector coalition to address the nation’s affordable housing crisis for America’s most vulnerable communities.
The Opportunity Starts at Home campaign seeks to mobilize powerful new constituencies, including organizations beyond the housing sector. Together, they will promote federal priorities to ensure that people with the lowest incomes have access to safe, decent, affordable housing in neighborhoods where everyone has equitable opportunities to thrive. |

Research Continues to show impact of Racial Disparities |
New data explored in the New York Times show how structural barriers threaten the income and wealth of African Americans. Among the findings, the study shows that black boys born into affluent families are much more likely to become economically poor as adults than are similar white boys.
This research contributes to a growing understanding of the social and economic impact of racial inequity in the United States — including within homelessness. Earlier this month, new research from The Center for Social Innovation explored not only the racial disparities in homelessness among people of color, but also the impact of inequity in areas related to homelessness, such as housing, criminal justice, and behavioral health. |

The Alliance is Seeking Summer Interns |
The Alliance will be hiring 2–3 full-time interns for Summer 2018 at its Washington, D.C. office. Prospective candidates should be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant area of study. Interns will assist in projects across the communications, development, and policy teams, as well as support efforts around the Alliance’s National Conference and Capitol Hill day in July. Candidates should indicate which of those areas are of most interest to them and should describe the experience and skills they would bring to projects in those interest areas. |
