Supportive Housing Training Center Fall Courses

HUD Keeping Families Together Under One Roof

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) last week awarded $30 million to public housing authorities nationwide, which will work closely with local public welfare agencies to identify youth at risk of homelessness and families whose lack of adequate housing is the primary reason their children are in foster care. This funding through HUD's Family Unification Program (FUP) will make 3,000 vouchers available for families unable to secure affordable housing for their children or dependents. CSH-One Roof was a strong advocate on Capitol Hill for advancing the $30 million in federal appropriations now funding the new vouchers.

Free Webinar Unlocks HUD FUP Vouchers

HUD's Family Unification Program (FUP) vouchers offer new opportunities for Public Housing Authorities (PHAs), Public Child Welfare Agencies (PCWAs), Homeless Response Systems (CoCs) and other community partners to serve families in need. Join CSH-One Roof and the Council of Large Public Housing Authorities for a free webinar on December 13 at 1:00pm ET to find out how. We will jointly provide an overview on implementation lessons learned and best practices from PHA's that have successfully implemented FUP vouchers.

Announcing a National Healthy Aging Academy

With support from the AARP Foundation, CSH is pleased to announce its next Healthy Aging Academy. Building on several successful local academies on healthy aging, this new Academy takes learning and action to the next level by increasing the capacity of supportive, affordable housing and human services providers nationwide to help them meet the unique needs of elderly tenants. This Academy is for case managers and supervisory staff in supportive and affordable housing projects serving older adults. It also can be useful for property management staff. The Academy will run from January - April 2019 and consists of 7 live virtual webinars. Learn more and register by clicking here.

Older Tenants Are Better Connected

Increasing Social Connectedness for Aging Supportive Housing Tenants is a free webinar available to you on December 10 at 2:00pm ET. Panelists will explore the impact of connection as a social determinant of health and the associated risk factors of isolation. They will highlight efforts to address social isolation for formerly homeless older adults in supportive housing with histories of complex social, medical, behavioral and long-term care needs. Social isolation among older people is a growing public health concern, and has been associated with poor physical and psychological outcomes and increased mortality. CSH is able to offer this webinar free of charge due to the generous support of the AARP Foundation, and the Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation.

Expanding Scale in New Jersey

Thanks to the generous support of Bank of America, CSH will continue efforts to expand supportive housing in the Garden State. The $20,000 grant CSH received from Bank of America on Giving Tuesday will mean additional supportive housing training and expert assistance for communities looking to help their most vulnerable individuals and families. Over the past year, New Jersey has increased investment in the Keeping Families Together supportive housing model and partnered with the New Jersey Hospital Association to develop even more supportive housing to improve health outcomes while lowering costs.

A Haven for Youth in Kansas City

Supportive housing for youth aging out of the foster care in Kansas City, Missouri is closer to reality now that Save, Inc. has received Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) for its Alhaven project. Both Save, Inc. and supportive housing developer Vecino Group graduated from the CSH Missouri Supportive Housing Institute, which provides development teams an incubator to pitch and refine their supportive housing ideas. With guidance from CSH staff, teams prepare themselves to apply for financing like LIHTC to create housing.  When completed, Alhaven will bring 50 units of much-needed affordable housing to Kansas City, providing homes with stabilizing services for youth 18-24 who have aged out of foster care.

More Institute Graduates Awarded Tax Credit

The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) announced their Low Income Housing Tax Credit Awards (LIHTC) and graduates of the last Indiana Supportive Housing Institute, cosponsored by CSH and IHCDA, were well represented among the successful candidates. Four graduates of the Institute are receiving LIHTC to develop a total of 176 units of affordable and supportive housing. A majority of these units are designated to include services for families as well as individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. If you have an interest in creating supportive housing in Indiana, your team still has time to apply for our 2019 Institute. Better hurry though, the deadline is this coming Monday, December 3.
