Starting with Stability

Supportive housing is providing stability for individuals who now have a place to call home through the Denver Social Impact Bond (SIB). Two and a half years into the program, 85% of the participants remain housed. Hear directly from several supportive housing residents, case managers and the architects of the SIB in an interactive story by the Urban Institute entitled, Starting with Stability: How Denver Is Breaking the Homelessness-Jail Cycle. Katie Bonamasso, Senior Project Manager for CSH in Colorado and manager of our intermediary role in the Denver initiative, said the SIB proves again that supportive housing works. "There's 30 years of evidence behind this intervention." she said. "Supportive housing changes lives.'"

Healthcare & Housing is Trending

In case you missed it last week, NPR's Marketplace ran a feature story on Kaiser Permanente's investment in affordable housing. Healthcare is Housing: In Oakland and elsewhere, healthcare is investing in affordable housing focuses on rising rents and the affordable housing crisis, and how housing-healthcare partnerships are making a difference. Robert Friant, CSH Managing Director of Policy and External Affairs, notes healthcare providers know housing stability is connected to better health.  "Not only does the health of the patient improve, the outcomes are better, but we all benefit because the cost of healthcare goes down," Friant said.

New Health Center for Tucson

Tucson, Arizona has a brand new health center set to serve over 10,000 patients. El Rio Community Health recently opened the doors to the Cherrybell Health Center, which will provide the community with a full array of health care and support services. CSH helped spur the development of Cherrybell with a $16 million New Markets Tax Credit investment. CSH uses our New Markets Tax Credit to support the innovative financing of mixed-use projects that include supportive housing or non-residential projects like community health facilities that are co-located with supportive housing, or convenient to access because they are built close by.

A New Home by New Moms

Young families in Chicago's western suburbs will have a place to call home with the opening of Oak Park Center and Clare Place, an 18-unit supportive housing residence and office facility developed by New Moms, an organization offering comprehensive support that meets the specific needs of young parents and their children. CSH is a proud supporter of New Moms providing an $800,000 predevelopment loan for this project. Deborah De Santis, President and CEO of CSH said, "We believe what New Moms is creating at Oak Park Center and Clare Place will transform lives and the surrounding neighborhoods in ways that will do more than ensure families simply survive; it will give them a real chance and opportunities to thrive for many years to come."

Addiction Services 101: Overdose Plan

CSH is bringing together supportive housing and homeless services providers and other systems to work more effectively with people who use substances, including opioids. The next free webinar in our Addiction Services 101 series - What's Your Overdose Plan? - will highlight administrative tools and engagement techniques that can help supportive housing programs prevent and respond to drug overdose. The free webinar will describe harm reduction strategies like carrying naloxone (Narcan) to reverse an opioid overdose. Join us on Wednesday April 17 for this free webinar at 1:30PM ET.

Innovation Corner: Navigate SIPPRA

The federal Social Impact Partnerships to Pay for Results Act (SIPPRA) aims to support outcomes-based financing and provide funding for social impact partnerships, including pay for success (PFS) projects. The Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for SIPPRA has now been released and CSH can help you navigate it. CSH understands PFS at every stage. We work directly with government stakeholders, practitioners, and thought leaders to ensure PFS projects are sound and successful. If you missed our recent webinar about SIPPRA and how we can help, it's easy to access the recording through this link and download the presentation materials by clicking here

Advocate in California for a Proven Solution

Consolidating and streamlining housing and service resources through a Flexible Housing Program is the goal of a CSH-supported Assembly Bill introduced by Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva in California. Using supportive housing, the Flexible Housing Program will end homelessness for Californians without a stable place to live. Help advance the Flexible Housing Program by calling on the California Assembly and Senate Budget Committees to take action and champion a proven solution. Click here to watch and hear the stories of advocate Frank Ybarra and Assemblymember Quirk-Silva confirming why this key legislation is part of the systemic change we need to ensure all Californians have safe, stable and affordable homes.

Funder Spotlight: Framework for I/DD

The Lanterman Housing Alliance (LHA), through funding received from the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD), has worked with CSH to launch an initiative to create a Statewide Strategic Framework to expand housing opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). In addition to fully leveraging available resources, the Strategic Framework uncovered new funding models and innovative land use and housing development strategies for creating homes for people with I/DD. Read more about the development of the Strategic Framework by clicking here

Housing Veterans Across Michigan

CSH, which has staff on the ground in the state and an office in Detroit, was excited when the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) confirmed that Wexford, Missaukee, and Manistee Counties in Michigan have effectively ended homelessness among Veterans. The three federal agencies indicate they are confident the infrastructure and systems are now in place to ensure that any Veteran experiencing homelessness in this three-county region in Michigan will get the support they need to quickly obtain a permanent home like the ones found in supportive housing.
