January 8, 2014 Congress Finalizing FY 2014 HUD Funding The federal funding process for fiscal year (FY) 2014 is widely expected to come to a close sometime next week. As such, Congress is working NOW to finalize funding levels for all federal programs, including the Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants. These final negotiations offer us an opportunity to make one final push for at least $2.26 billion for HUD's McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants in FY 2014 . Here's what you can do:     Call your Senators and Representative(s) THIS WEEK and ask to speak to the person who handles housing issues. The U.S. Government has set a goal of ending veteran homelessness by the end of 2015. Substantial progress needs to be made now in order to achieve that goal. This map measures progress made in ending veteran homelessness between 2012 and 2013. Red markers indicate reports of increases and green markers indicate reports of decreases. January 2014 HUD's NOFA: Score More with SOAR! HUD's Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for the FY 2013-FY 2014 Continuum of Care competition was released on November 22, with applications due on February 3, 2014. One of the most significant changes in this year's NOFA is that awards will be for two years. This change means that it is more important than ever to reinforce in your CoC's application that SOAR plays a critical role in ending chronic homelessness. SOAR meets the needs of people with disabilities who are experiencing chronic homelessness or at risk of homelessness by helping them to access mainstream benefits, including Social Security disability benefits. These benefits ultimately increase access to, and retention in, housing.
